The Factory stands as a testament to creativity and education intertwined. This innovative space, supported by Rutherford Bound as a pivotal tourism asset, has been instrumental in driving visitors to Rutherford County. By fostering an environment where imagination flourishes, The Factory not only enriches local experiences but also attracts visitors from near and far.
“Kids are in school for about seven and a half hours of the day, but there is so much learning that needs to take place outside of school,” said Alicia Fowler, a teacher at Crest Middle School in Shelby, NC. “They need to have those ‘ah-ha’ moments–to explore, use their hands, see what actually interests them.”
Once completed, The Factory will increase the current 11,000 square foot museum to a 27,000 square foot facility featuring tools and technology such as laser cutters, 3-D printers, and CNC robots.
In addition to sparking students' imaginations, The Factory is committed to supporting the work of educators. Mandi Williams, Kid Sense’s Deputy Director, has created programs and curriculum for The Factory that align with state and national standards for education. She is passionate about fostering ongoing conversations with teachers in Rutherford County and beyond.
“We’re asking educators, ‘What are you struggling with?’” Mandy said. “‘What are your students not understanding? What bores your students? How can we bridge the gap to make your job easier?’”
The Factory will serve an essential role in the future of Rutherford County, where jobs will increasingly reflect a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) based economy. Middle and high schoolers will have opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in this work environment.
“The goal is to create partnerships with the community, to create partnerships with industry, and to see where a STEM career can lead them in this particular place,” said Patrick Horehouse, Director of Education for KidSenses.
The first phase of construction at The Factory is now complete, including structural renovation of the historic building. Originally built in 1924, the 100-year-old edifice has served as a car dealership and a five-and-dime store. Appropriately, this important part of Rutherfordton’s economic past is now a lynchpin for its future workforce.
Willard Whitson, Executive Director of KidSenses, says that the museum is a testament to the vision and spirit of the community. He and his team are committed to continuing its mission through the expansion of The Factory.
“It gives us another avenue to support the fundamentally important work that we do,” Willard said of The Factory. “That is enriching the lives of children, helping them find their passion. That’s really the key of what we’re trying to do.”
